Bought back JMAT shares, I sold on 16 March, yesterday morning at a slightly lower price, 2342p, which covered all my selling and buying costs. Wish now I had waited a few hours as price fell another 87p. At those prices a bargain IMO. By Rhigos

Re: SP still looking strong

LKH,

You are probably aware of JMAT's roots in banking as assayer and later refiner for BOE which is why article involving Rothschild was of interest.
http://www.matthey.com/ourcompany/history?era=85d46ffd8d0349c08c8784994d2df8e3

I agree with your views on JMAT one of the best companies in my portfolio. It was because it's SP was up 180% on what I paid, that it was worth taking some profit in March to get myself up to CGT exempt limit. Would have done a bed & breakfast but as that not allowed now for CGT, had to wait 30 days to buy back. As JMAT not as volatile as my mining and oil shares made sense to take profits from JMAT as more likely to be able to buy back at close to sell price. The repurchase of shares at around £23.5 will reduce average price and thus CGT liability on any future sales.

Yesterday they closed only 8p off their highest ever closing SP (2408p on 2 Apr 12).
Yes, interesting about the supposed Rothschild link, though it sounds like an overblown conspiracy theory to me.
I'm very comfortable holding JMAT, which is an excellent and well run company.

SP still looking strong

I have been hoping SP would fall back a bit as I want to buy back shares I sold on 16 March ( to make some CG, I sold 40% of my JMAT holding). If I had moved early yesterday I could have bought back at a lower price and covered costs. Recent SP movement, yesterday +2.5% on day +6.8% on week, possibly influenced by platinum price: http://www.kitco.com/charts/liveplatinum.html

Main reason for strength I guess is believe that car market is expected to pick up and boost JMAT's catalyst sales.
Came across this article that was quite an interesting read:
I read recently that their refining business is losing money. It has fallen about 7% this year so may go as low as £20 but IMO probably not.
I know what you mean, m8, but I'm hanging on to my Glaxo. 15% of their biz is stuff like Horlicks. Apparently the Chinee top boys LOVE that stuff and can't get enough of it. As any fule kno there are a LOT of Chinees. Glaxo, as I'm sure you know, also sell Ribena which will rot your teeth like a good 'un .... so then you can buy Glaxo's excellent toothpastes. Win/win, m8.

Still got my BLT/RIO. I tend to agree with your implication that BLT is better than RIO, but I take my hat off to Albanese for his moves into Guinea and Mongolia, even if he did make a complete horlicks (in a bad sense!) of Alcan, albeit that was Skinner's fault. Skinner off of Shell passim ..... I shall buy Shell again, but only when/if it falls below £20.
GSK used be my largest holding sold out in Jul 2003.
Sold out of ULVR in Nov 1999
I had Zeneca shares once upon a time, they came from holding ICI shares.

I am not keen on pharmaceutical sector , patents run out and new block busters more miss than hit.

I believe this year commodity shares, particularly mining will do well. My Xstrata shares did well today, +9.9%, on merger (more like take over) talks.POG + 32.2% in 2012 (in 23 trading days, 1,978% AER!!!). If you still hold your RIO and BLT shares, will be gaining since end of 2011 (+27.4% & +16.9%). My portfolio up 1.6% today starting to make up last years paper losses. Will be able to make CG allowance by selling some RIO and buying BLT with proceeds. Oil shares a disappointment, PMO, TLW, CNE etc all lacklustre performance. With high oil price I am surprised, but I understand there are various problems with all of these companies. Shell, which I have not got look attractive must buy some when I have cash.
