WASHINGTON (AFX) - The US embassy in Paris has been closed to the public for security reasons, as tens of thousands of demonstrators haven taken to the streets to protest against pension reform plans, State Department officials said.
"We thought it would be a prudent move, given that there are about 50,000 people protesting in the vicinity," one official said. "People are still working inside, but we have closed to the public for the day."
A second official said there was no information about a threat to the embassy or to US diplomats from the demonstrators.
The State Department officials said the embassy in Paris is likely to reopen to the public tomorrow.
